The 2017 Governor’s STEM Scholars

Bianca Gabrielle Acot

Bianca Gabrielle Acot is a senior at Bergen County Technical High School. She plans to explore research opportunities in medicine as she continues her education. She is an active participant in Chemistry Club and the Young Science Achievers Program.

Ashima Agarwal

Ashima Agarwal is a senior at New Providence High School. She plans to study biomedical engineering as she continues her education. She enjoys singing in choral groups and leads her school’s Future Civic Leaders club. She has also been a research intern at NJIT and hopes to use this experience to advance her career goals.

Shivani Aggarwal

Shivani Aggarwal is a senior at Leonia High School. She plans to engage in research as she continues her education with the ultimate goal of teaching one day. She is an active participant on her school’s math and science league teams. She also volunteered at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine studying Structural and Chemical Biology, and continues to volunteer at the Liberty Science Center.

Mahaa Ahmed

Mahaa Ahmed is a sophomore at Rowan University. She currently studies chemical engineering and intends to study medicine as she continues her education. She has published original research and currently works as a research assistant at Rowan.

John Anderson

John Anderson is a junior at North Hunterdon High School. He plans to study business and mechanical engineering as he continues his education. He is an Eagle Scout and an active member of his high school’s Model United Nations club.                                    

Joyce An

Joyce An is a junior at Ridge High School. She plans to explore science and medicine as she continues her education. Joyce is an active participant in her high school’s New Jersey Science League, fencing team, math league, and newspaper club.                                                        

Madalyn Arcurio

Madalyn Arcurio is a senior at the Academy for Health and Medical Sciences at Bridgewater. She plans to study biology and psychology as she continues her education with the ultimate goal of entering medical research. She is an active member of her high school’s fencing team and Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.                  

Michael Bai

Michael Bai is a junior at Phillipsburg High School. He plans to study aerospace and chemical engineering as he continues his academic career. He is an active participant in his high school’s marching band as well as its Key Club.                  

Tanique Bennett

Tanique Bennett is a senior at Winslow High School. She plans to pursue biology and medicine as she continues her education. She is an active member of her high school’s marching band, Science National Honors Society and Leo Club.                            

Anthony Berninzon

Anthony Berninzon is a freshman at Rutgers. He plans to pursue chemical and civil engineering as he continues his education. He is an active member of JerseySTEM as well as his high school’s computer science club, science club, Key Club and National Honors Society.

Victoria Bigdelle

Victoria Bigdelle is a senior at Voorhees High School. She plans to study medicine as she continues her education. She is an active member of her high school’s National Honors Society, tennis and swim teams.                                                                            

Jessica Binkiewicz

Jessica Binkiewicz is a post baccalaureate student at Caldwell University. After completion of her current program, she plans to attend medical school. She volunteers in the Emergency Department of Mountainside Hospital and is an active member of the Alpha Chi, Psi Chi and Delta Epsilon Sigma Honors Societies.

Kevin Blackwell

Kevin Blackwell is a freshman at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He plans to pursue medicine as he continues his education. He has been an active participant in lab research opportunities and tutoring other students in STEM fields.                                    

Sofia Castro-Pedrido

Sofia Castro-Pedrido is a junior at Rutgers University. She studies Biomedical Engineering and will pursue medicine as she continues her education. She works at the Liberty Science Center and as a research assistant at her college, she also tutors other students in math and science.

Aydan Celik

Aydan Celik is a senior at Fair Lawn High School. She plans to double major in biomedical and mechanical engineering to pursue a career as an entrepreneur in the STEM field. She co-owns and manages her family restaurant, is a committed member her high school’s Science, French, and National honors societies, and actively participates in its chemistry, biology, math, and physics leagues.

Sandeep Dhagat

Sandeep Dhagat is a sophomore at Raritan Valley Community College. He plans to pursue medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology as he continues his education. He has been an active participant in research and served as a lab assistant.                                    

Marissa Dolch

Marissa Dolch is a freshman at The College of New Jersey. She studies engineering and intends to pursue a postgraduate degree in a field of applied engineering. She was an active member of her high school’s National Honors Society and Technology Student Association, where she tutored other students in science and math.                                    

Kathleen Falcon

Kathleen Falcon is a junior at Farleigh Dickinson University. She plans to pursue psychology and computer science as she continues her education. She serves as a lab assistant, programming instructor and is an active member of her school’s Women in Computer Science program.                    

Gabrielle Farrell

Gabrielle Farrell is a senior at St. Rose High School. She plans to study engineering, specializing in either chemical or environmental engineering as she continues her education. She serves as a Lab Assistant and is an active member of her high school’s National Honors society and Spanish National Honors Society.

Heather Farrell

Heather Farrell is a junior at Immaculate Heart Academy. She plans to pursue biology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering and engage in disease research as she continues her education. She has been awarded multiple community awards for her community service is an active member of her school’s STEM program.

Jacqueline Fezza

Jacqueline Fezza is a senior at the Monmouth County Academy of Allied Health and Science. She plans to study medicine as she continues her education. She is a National Honor Society member and a Science Club and Math League officer, and she developed Science in Motion, a program that promotes STEM subjects to children in the tri-state area.

Nicholas Fotopoulos

Nicholas Fotopoulos is a senior at the Monmouth County Biotechnology High School. He plans to study medicine and pursue numerous research opportunities as he continues his education. He tutors other students in STEM subjects and is also a member of his high school’s National Honors Society, student government, cross country and tennis teams.

Claire Furino

Claire Furino is a senior at Voorhees High School. She plans to study biomedical engineering as she continues her education. She is a member of her high school’s tennis and soccer teams as well as Model UN.                                                                                                                        

Allison Gasnick

Allison Gasnick is a senior at Wayne Hills High School. She plans to pursue biology, immunology, and medicine as she continues her education. She tutors other students in STEM subjects and is an active member of her high school’s National Honors Society and French Honors Society.

Jiawen Ge

Jiawen Ge is a senior at Secaucus High School. He plans to study mathematics and computer science as he continues his education. He is the captain of his high school’s tennis team, president of the math club and president of the Mu Alpha Theta honor’s society.

Julissa Gesumaria

Julissa Gesumaria is a sophomore at Middlesex County College. She is pursuing a degree in biology and plans to go into the field of neurology. She was selected to be a NASA fellow and was asked to conduct her own STEM based research project and present her findings at the MCC Science Symposium. She is also an active member in Biology Society as well as the STEM Club.

Yahel Gomes

Yahel Gomes is a senior at North Hunterdon High School. She plans to pursue biomedical engineering and applied chemistry as she continues her education. She is a Section Leader of the Horns/Low Brass Section of her high school’s marching band, National English Honors Society and National Latin Honors Society.

Jason Gong

Jason Gong is a junior at Bergen County Technical High School. He plans to study applied mathematics and economics as he continues his education. He holds an elected office in his school’s class council and is an active member of the Montvale TV Access Crew.

John Goodman

John Goodman is a junior at Rahway High School. He plans to study biochemistry as he continues his education. He is an active member of his high school’s Science Olympiad and National Honors Society.                                                                        

Alisha Griffin

Alisha Griffin is a senior at Rahway High School. She plans to study animal behavior and animal physiology as she continues her education. She is an active and leading member of her high school’s marching band and debate team. She is also a historian in her school’s NHS chapter.                  

Daniel Gruspier

Daniel Gruspier is a senior at the Monmouth County Academy of Allied Health. He plans to study theoretical physics and pursue a graduate degree in the field. He is an active member of his high school’s mock trial and Model UN.                                    

Daniel Gulko

Daniel Gulko is a junior at Holmdel High School. He plans to study medicine and pursue numerous research opportunities as he continues his education. He is a recipient of The Emporer Science award from Bristol Meyers Squibb and PBS. He is also a member of his high school’s National Honors Society.    

Liza Guner

Liza Guner is a junior at Williamstown High School. She plans to study biomechanical engineering and nanotechnology as she continues her education. She volunteers at a pediatric clinic and is an active participant in Project Lead the Way.                                    

Eric He

Eric He is a junior at the Monmouth County High Tech High School. He plans to study artificial intelligence and math as he continues his education. He founded a company CompMath, to tutor motivated students in higher mathematics. He is a member of his high school’s student government and math team.

Brandon Hickson

Brandon Hickson is a junior at Washington High School. He plans to study biotechnology as he continues his education. He tutors other students in math, is also an active member of the Kitty Hawk Air Honors society and his high school’s basketball team.

Nandini Isaac

Nandini Isaac is a junior at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She plans to pursue biochemistry is and an MD-PhD as she continues her education. She works as a student researcher at NJIT and is president of the NJIT chapter of the American Chemical Society.            

Jake Kaplan

Jake Kaplan is a junior at the Bergen County Academies in the Academy for Engineering and Design Technology. He plans to pursue chemical engineering as he continues his education. He is a member of the Boy Scouts of America and his high school’s math team.                                    

Christopher Kiel

Christopher Kiel is a junior at Princeton Day School. He plans to pursue research of alternative energy sources as he continues his education. He is an Eagle Scout as well as an active member of his high school’s Model UN, Investment club, Environmental Action club, and fencing team.

Eric Kohn

Eric Kohn is a junior at Rowan University. He currently studies biotechnology and intends to pursue a doctorate in molecular biology. He is the Programming Captain of the FRC robotics team as well as an active member of the National Honor’s Society and National Technical Honors Society.

Lev Krasnovsky

Lev Krasnovsky is a senior at Bergen County Academy for Medical Science Technology. He plans to pursue medicine with a focus in endocrinology as continues his education. He placed 3rd at the 2015 HOSA National Pharmacological Championships and is an active member of his school’s National Honors Society and French Honors Society.

Sylvia Ludwick

Sylvia Ludwick is a junior at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology. She plans to explore mechanical engineering and computer science as she continues her education. She is the captain of her school’s cross country team and was a member of the Regional Championship U.S. Navy’s Sea Perch Submersible team which also competed and took a third place finish at the National Competition in May.

Yichuan Ma

Yichuan Ma is a senior at Cherry Hill High School East. He plans to pursue science and medicine as he continues his education. He works in a research lab at the University of Pennsylvania and is an active member of his high school’s tennis team, physics, chemistry and engineering clubs.

Samantha Magda

Samantha Magda is a senior at North Hunterdon High School who plans to study chemical engineering and biochemistry as she continues her education. At North Hunterdon, Sam is a varsity sabre fencer, a member of the National and French Honor Societies, and a Student Ambassador. She also serves on her school’s Relay for Life Planning Committee and Executive Council for Interact (Rotary) Club.

Chelsea Mann

Chelsea Mann is a senior at Kean University. She currently studies biotechnology and chemistry and will pursue an advanced degree in biotechnology as she continues her education. She has been awarded multiple NCAA-All Academic Honors, is an active member of the Alpha Sigma Honor Society and the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.

Raniya Martin-Davis

Raniya Martin-Davis is a senior at the Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology. She plans to study medicine and pursue dentistry as she continues her education. She is an active member of the Girl Scouts as well as her high school’s National Honors Society and Junior ROTC program.

Anne Mkrtchyan

Anne Mkrtchyan is a senior at Egg Harbor Township High School. She plans to explore computer science and biotechnology as she continues her education. She plays varsity tennis, is president of her class council as well as an active participant in mock trial, Future Business Leaders of America and the computer club.

Sylvia Mohammed

Sylvia Mohammed is a sophomore at Cumberland County College. She is currently pursuing a degree in biomedical science and nursing. She was a 2014 recipient of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey Merit Scholarship and is an active member of the Phi Theta Kappa and Mu Alpha Theta Honor Societies.

Aslesha Parchure

Aslesha Parchure is a freshman at Princeton University. She plans to study computer science, operations research and financial engineering. She is a member of the National Honors Society and is the president of her high school’s Amnesty International Club.

Loreidaly Perez

Loreidaly Perez is a junior in Passaic County STEM Academy. She plans to pursue medicine as she continues her education. She tutors students in STEM subjects, is also an active member of Ramapo Upward Bound in Ramapo College and her high school Green Club.

Gladis Philip

Gladis Philip is a senior at Saddle Brook High School. She plans to pursue biology and medicine as she continues her education. She is an active member of her high school’s National Honors Society and serves as a tutor in math and science to other students at her school.

Mathew Roskoski

Mathew Roskoski is a senior at North Hunterdon High School. He plans to study biomedical engineering and math as he continues his education. He is the co-captain of his high school’s Destination Imagination Structural Engineering team and has won numerous awards for science and engineering projects.

Arneris Rojas

Arneris Rojas is a senior at the Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology. She plans to pursue human physiology and medicine as she continues her education. She is the captain of her high school cross-country team, an active member of the National Honors Society and Junior ROTC.

Sneha Sharma

Sneha Sharma is a senior at Holmdel High School. She plans to study medicine and computer science as she continues her education. She has won numerous awards for her independent research, tutors students in STEM subjects, has completed three internships, and is an active member of her high school’s National Honors Society and Science League.

Matthew Shih

Matthew Shih is a junior at the Union County Magnet High School. He plans to pursue electrical and mechanical engineering. He has engaged in independent original research, serves as a volunteer ambassador at the Liberty Science Center and is an active member of his high school’s robotics team.

Emily Sinicalco is a senior at the Academy for Health and Medical Sciences. She plans to study microbiology and genetics as she continues her education. She is a member of her high school’s National Honors Society as well as the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.

Ken Stier

Ken Stier is a junior at the Academy for Medical Science Technology at Bergen County Academies. He plans to pursue both biomedical research and clinical medicine as he continues his education. He is actively involved in celiac disease research and works as an emergency medical technician for the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Molly Szpakowski

Molly Szpakowski is a junior at Morris Catholic High School. She plans to pursue medicine as she continues her education. She works at Hackettstown Hospital, is an active member of her high school’s National Honors Society, Science Honors Society and Beta Club.

Melissa Tu

Melissa Tu is a senior at Franklin Township High School. She plans to pursue engineering and specialize in civil engineering as she continues her education. She is a member of her high school’s National Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society, Girl’s Tennis Team and Future Business Leaders of America. She is also Chairperson of the Franklin Township Youth Council.

Joan Marie Tubungbanua

Joan Marie Tubungbanua is a junior at High Tech High School. She plans to explore computer science and mathematics further as she continues her education. She is the president of her school’s programming club and she is an active member of the jazz chorus, the varsity tennis team, student council and is a peer leadership mentor. Joan has performed with her rock band as lead vocalist at Carnegie hall.

Nupur Turakhia

Nupur Turakhia is a junior at Stevens Institute of Technology. She plans to pursue graduate study in civil engineering, specializing in structural and green engineering as she continues her education. She is a member of her college’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders and tutors other students in science and math.

Athmika Vaseehran

Athmika Vaseehran is a senior at North Brunswick High School. She plans to study cellular biology and neuroscience as she continues her education. She is the president of her high school’s science league, a member of student government, mock trial and tennis team.

Isaac Velasquez

Isaac Velasquez is a senior at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School. He plans to study computer science and applied mathematics as he continues his education. He is the president of his high school’s philosophy club and an active member of his high school track team, math league, science league and robotics club.

Emily Walsh

Emily Walsh is a junior at the Morris County School of Technology. She plans to pursue medicine and research opportunities as she continues her education. She is the Vice President of her high school’s Health Occupations Students of America chapter and is also an active member of the golf team, multicultural club, Key Club and peer leadership program.

Calvin Wang

Calvin Wang is a senior at the Monmouth County Biotechnology High School. He plans to study biomedical engineering and economics as he continues his education. He holds a provisional patent for a software product, tutors students in STEM subjects and is a member of his high school’s National Honors Society.

Grace Wang

Grace Wang is a junior at JP Stevens High School. She plans to study engineering as she continues her education. She is an editor of her high school’s newspaper, a member of student government and was accepted into an elite cyber security program at NYU.                    

Yihan Wu

Yihan Wu is a junior at the Monmouth County High Tech High School. She plans to pursue engineering and architecture as she continues her education. She is a member of her high school’s Experimental Research Group, Creative Arts Cub and science league team.

Joy Xie

Joy Xie is a junior at Mountain Lakes High School. She plans to pursue pediatric medicine as she continues her education. She has participated in research programs at Kean University, is the editor-in-chief of the Gauss Mathematics and is an active member of her high school’s environmental club.

Celina Zhou

Celina Zhou is a junior at East Brunswick High School. She plans to study chemistry, biology and engineering as she continues her education. She is an active member of her high school’s chamber orchestra as well as the biology and chemistry league teams.

Mary Zsolway

Mary Zsolway is a junior at Villa Victoria Academy. She plans to pursue medicine as she continues her education. She is a member of her high school’s student government, math team, stage crew, soccer, basketball and softball teams.
