Edson Marcius Oliveira Duran is a senior at Science Park High School. As a Carnegie Mellon University SAMS Polymer Chemistry Research Fellow, he investigated radical scavenging in hydrocarbon Pemion ionomers to mitigate oxidative degradation in fuel cell membranes and presented his findings at the SAMS Symposium. Edson founded and serves as president of his school’s Science National Honor Society chapter, where he established its inaugural science fair and helped lead its first New Jersey Science Olympiad team. He also co-founded Brainspire, a student-led initiative providing hands-on physics and electronics workshops to underrepresented youth. Edson’s interests lie at the intersection of materials science and environmental sustainability. Outside of STEM, he plays trumpet in his school’s concert and marching bands and practices Judo.
