Julia Schanen

Julia Schanen is a senior at Montclair High School. Her math poetry won the 2021 National Museum of Mathematics Strogatz Prize. Her peer support group, Montclair STEM Mentors, connects upperclassmen with 6th-10th graders in her school district, and was awarded an Excellence in Equity grant from Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence. A former competitive gymnast, Julia enjoys doing math problems late into the night and sharing her love of math as a pre-algebra & algebra teacher at Succeed2Gether, a teaching assistant at New York Math Circle and an MHS Math League top scorer. Julia is also interested in educational and climate justice, applied math/physics research within climate science, gardening, sustainable fashion and circular economies. Her fashion thrifting/styling business, @abbeyroadthrift, is a verified top seller on depop.com, where over the past few years she has promoted upcycling & sustainability to teenagers worldwide and donates 30% of profits to climate justice and educational equity groups. Julia is obsessed with the Beatles, bouldering, Wes Anderson movies, and her dog, Oliver. Her favorite book at the moment is Proofs by Jay Cummings, a math textbook that includes jokes and poetry. She hopes to pursue graduate studies in applied math/physics and environmental science.
