Scholars Learn About Nuclear Energy with PSEG

On March 28, 2024, members of the 2024 Governor’s STEM Scholars class headed to South Jersey to tour PSEG's Salem and Hope Creek Generating Stations, three nuclear plants in New Jersey. These stations make up the third largest nuclear power facility in the United States and produce nearly half of New Jersey’s electricity and 85% of the state’s air pollution-free generation. During the visit, Scholars learned about the creation of electricity, specifically nuclear power, the global and domestic issues associated with nuclear power, and discussed its effects on climate change. In the afternoon, Scholars boarded a bus and toured the plant location, specifically the control room simulators, where many of the facilities’ staff are trained to manage the generating stations. Scholars also learned about the local estuary sites and PSEG’s efforts to protect the watershed.
